about

Frostbitten is a song sung from me, to me. It’s like a dialogue between the cold, broken side of myself, to a warmer, happier side who I haven’t seen in a long time and was at risk of going M.I.A. A frozen heart at risk of becoming frostbitten, almost blackened and dying, finding a sliver of warmth and the potential to thaw. As it melts, I start to see both sides and am left wondering how crazy it is that the warmer part just disappeared…but there it is. The cold missed the warm. Warm can’t help being smitten by cold and resolves to wear mittens at the thought of cold. Together, they’re just right. A hot minute coalescing with a cold moment.

During the two weeks leading up to Christmas, 2022, I had a bad case of COVID and was inspired by the Pixies “Wave of Mutilation” [UK Surf version] after hearing it in a movie. A couple days later I plugged in an electric guitar and just started playing, wanting to create a single melody line on the guitar as an intro to the song, and in a hot minute I felt like I had something to work with. On Christmas Eve, I wrapped up the first demo and then spent most of the week in the studio, finishing up my final version right around New Year’s Day; albeit still fairly congested and with my voice not feeling 100%. My intent was to create a simple song for release on January 23rd, a song that pays tribute to my alternative rock heroes like the Pixies, using the same type of instrument line-up. Here it is.

Here’s to the fragile state of balance in life and love, which never ceases to threaten defeat, as well as amaze and inspire. And if there’s a chance that you might get frostbite: wear mittens, not gloves.

lyrics

Who am I? Where are you?

In a hot minute it'll all fall apart
I know well, the feeling of a broken heart
In a cold moment we'll be frostbitten
And I'm smitten at the thought of you
In another minute we'll figure all of it out
And we'll know it beyond the pale shade of a doubt

The sound of a back-handed compliment
Hitting you hard, knocking your wind out
In a hot minute we'll figure all of it out
In another minute, we'll know it all too well
In a cold moment we'll be frostbitten
And I'll wear mittens at the thought of you

Where are you in all of it?
Where was I when I missed out?
Where were you in all of it?
All of it, all of it's good

In a hot minute it'll all fall apart
In another minute, we'll figure it all out
In a cold moment I'll be frostbitten
And I'm missing out on all of you

Where were you when all of it fell apart?
Who am I without you?
Where were you when I missed out?
Who am I?

Where were you in all of it?
Where was I when I missed out?
When I missed you...when I missed you

I missed you
